Composer, conductor, pianist and improviser Nayoung Jung (b. Busan, South Korea) grew up with classical music, starting piano at a very early age. She began studying composition at high school, eventually earning a BA in composition. (Her composition teacher in Korea, Eunok Cho, had received her MA in composition at Mills). Nayoung won many awards and had her pieces performed by professional musicians and groups in Korea. In 2005 she came to the US to continue her composition studies. Since then she has been active as choir singer in the East Bay Singers, music director at the Gospel Church of Alameda, freelance accompanist, and private music instructor. After studying for her master’s degree with Dr. Jeffrey Miller at CSU East Bay she was admitted to Mills where Nayoung is primarily interested in Art music for orchestra and chamber ensemble. In recent years she has composed and re-created pieces adopting traditional Korean music, introducing sound from Korea into her composed work. Meanwhile she teaches piano, voice, composition and music theory to all ages.
